The Light That Bends Round Corners

- A Novel -

Would you be willing to sacrifice seeing your young children for ten years in order to be allowed to divorce your abusive husband and marry the man you love?

'Through the lives of two strong but troubled women, two worlds interweave: the beauty and dangers of Malaysia and the ambitious modern west. This is a sensitive, atmospheric and absorbing novel.'  Sue Gee

Alexandra Carey was inspired to write The Light That Bends Round Corners after living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for seven years. Set in 2006, the story follows two very different women whose lives overlap and become intrinsically linked as they both face their own troubles:  Laura is a wife and mother, who finds herself having to give up her job in London as a fashion journalist and move to a beautiful but dilapidated bungalow in Kuala Lumpur. Mariel, the Filipina maid she hires, has spent her whole life dealing with injustice and abuse. Laura’s story is a journey of self-discovery. Mariel’s is a love story - a fight for a better life and to be with the man she loves.

The novel sensitively touches on themes such as abuse, love, mental health and migration.

'An unusual, beautifully rendered and atmospheric novel. The suspenseful storytelling and compelling characters will keep you turning the pages.’   Rachel Hore, Sunday Times bestseller.

'An exquisitely painful account of cultures on a collision course. Tone perfect, this is a book to make you squirm and laugh aloud!' David Roberts (author of the Lord Edward Corinth mysteries)
